تتزايد كارثة تكدس النفايات يوما بعد يوم مما يفاقم الكارثة الصحية والبيئة التي تعيشها المدنية وتشكل بيئة خصبة للأمراض والحشرات والقوارض الضارة وخطراً على صحة وحياة الإنسان، حيث بلغت كمية النفايات المتكدسة في داخل المدينة أكثر من ربع مليون طن.  

وتبذل بلدية غزة جهودا كبيرة للتخفيف والحد من الكارثة بجمع النفايات المتكدسة في مكبات مؤقتة في قلب المدينة وتقوم بجمع أولي للنفايات وكنس الشوارع الرئيسة، ولكن نقص الإمكانيات لاسيما الآليات الخاصة بجمع النفايات والوقود وكذلك منع الاحتلال لطواقم البلدية من ترحيل النفايات للمكب في جحر الديك شرق المدينة يفاقم من الكارثة. 

ومع بدء ارتفاع درجات الحرارة تزداد المشكلة بسبب سرعة تحلل النفايات وتسرب عصارتها للخزان الجوفي وكذلك اشتعال المكبات بفعل ذاتي وانبعاث دخان كثيف وضار. 

وتناشد بلدية غزة المجتمع الدولي والمنظمات الدولية بضرورة التدخل العاجل وإنقاذ الأوضاع الإنسانية الكارثية التي تسببها العدوان وتوفير الإمكانيات لجمع وترحيل النفايات والحد من الكارثة الخطيرة التي تعيشها المدينة.

Over a Quarter Million Tons of Solid Waste in the Heart of the City

Urgent Appeal to Save the City from a Solid Waste Accumulation Catastrophe

The solid waste accumulation crisis is worsening by the day, further aggravating the severe health and environmental conditions the city is enduring. The mounting solid waste has created a fertile breeding ground for diseases, insects, and harmful rodents, posing a serious threat to public health and human life. The total volume of accumulated solid waste within the city has now exceeded a quarter of a million tons.

Gaza Municipality is exerting tremendous efforts to mitigate and contain the crisis by gathering the accumulated solid waste into temporary dumping sites in the heart of the city. It also carries out preliminary waste collection and sweeps the main streets. However, the lack of essential resources—particularly solid waste collection vehicles and fuel—as well as the occupation’s obstruction of municipal crews from transferring waste to the main landfill in Juhr al-Deek, east of the city, continues to worsen the situation.

As temperatures begin to rise, the crisis becomes even more critical due to the rapid decomposition of the solid waste, leachate infiltration into the groundwater, and the spontaneous combustion of waste piles, resulting in the emission of thick, harmful smoke.

Gaza Municipality urgently appeals to the international community and humanitarian organizations to intervene immediately to address the catastrophic humanitarian conditions caused by the ongoing aggression, and to provide the necessary means for collecting and transferring solid waste in order to alleviate this escalating crisis.
